Lexie had just taken the enchiladas out of the oven when she heard a sound at the door. She stepped around the corner and looked to see if it was Paul using his key, but the sound stopped. Suddenly, a pounding on the door sent her heart racing, paralyzing her with fear.
Several moments went by, Lexie frozen in place, staring at the door. Her phone was across the room, but her feet wouldn’t move. More pounding.
“Lexie?”
Relief washed over her. “Paul?”
“Yeah. Let me in.”
She rushed to unlock the door, throwing it open before falling into his arms. He wrapped her tight. “Hey, hey. It’s okay.”
She was shaking. “Why didn’t you use your key?”
“I did, but you had the chain across.”
She looked back at the gold chain hanging on the doorframe, realizing she had just slid it open to let him in. “Oh, I’m sorry. I guess I forgot.”
“It’s okay. I can’t blame you for being on edge.”
She kissed him and headed directly for the kitchen. “Dinner is ready, so clean up and we’ll eat.”
“Okay. Something smells great.”
Twenty minutes later, they had full glasses of wine and empty plates of enchiladas. They moved to the couch and snuggled up. Paul was quiet for a while, and Lexie finally looked up at him. “Penny for your thoughts?”
“Nowadays, it’s at least a dollar!”
She smiled. “I feel so much better with you.”
He leaned forward and set down his glass. “Actually, that’s what I’ve been thinking about. When’s the funeral?”
“Monday. Why?”
“I’ve got an idea. Let’s get you away from here for a few days.”
“Away? You mean down to your place?”
“No, I mean away. I’m already packed, so you grab a bag, and we’ll take a road trip. Just you and me.”
Lexie sat forward. “Oh, I don’t know. I’m scheduled to work Friday and Sunday.”
“Come on, Lex. I’m sure they’ll understand, and it will help take your mind off all this.”
She stared at him, running his suggestion through her mind.
It’s a good idea, but leaving the girls behind seems unfair. Still, being stuck here alone scares the life out of me.
“What about you, Paul? Don’t you have to work?”
“You know me. I work when I want to, and right now I don’t want to. I want to get you away from here.”
“Where would we go?”
“I don’t know. Let’s get on 281, go north, and see where it takes us. It’ll be just us and the open road!”
She laughed. “You’re so corny. Okay, I’ll call Patty and we’ll leave tonight.”
His look turned solemn. “That’s fine, but then the phone goes away. It’s an escape, okay?”
“Deal.”
His smile returned, twice as wide. “Then get packed!”
